How the water becomes wood

A chart is a stack of flat sheets until the water's real soundings tell it what shape to take.

  1. SurveyReal bathymetric soundings set every contour line before a single cut is made.
  2. CutEach depth band is laser-cut from its own sheet of Baltic birch.
  3. StainWater layers are stained by hand, reading darker the deeper the water runs.
  4. StackThe sheets are registered and stacked in sequence, and the bed's true shape rises out of the wood.
  5. DetailShorelines, cities and place names are engraved or printed at high resolution across the surface.
  6. FrameA solid wood frame made to fit finishes the piece, ready to hang.

Lake Erie's north shore is Ontario's south coast, and it is the warmest, shallowest and most productive of the Great Lakes. Point Pelee reaches further south than northern California. The beaches at Port Stanley and Port Dover fill every summer, the walleye fishery is among the best in North America, and Long Point stretches 40 kilometres out into open water.

Shallow does not mean simple. Erie drops from a few metres in the western basin to more than 60 in the east, and that shelf is what makes it warm quickly, freeze over, and produce the storms it is known for. It takes in the Detroit River at one end and pours over Niagara Falls at the other.

Our Lake Erie 3D wood map traces those contours in layered Baltic birch. Each layer is laser-cut to the real depth data and hand-stained so the water darkens as the basin deepens. Ultra-high-resolution UV printing adds shoreline detail and points of interest, and the finished piece sits in a solid wood frame made to fit.

It arrives ready to hang.
