A chart is a stack of flat sheets until the water's real soundings tell it what shape to take.

SurveyReal bathymetric soundings set every contour line before a single cut is made.
CutEach depth band is laser-cut from its own sheet of Baltic birch.
StainWater layers are stained by hand, reading darker the deeper the water runs.
StackThe sheets are registered and stacked in sequence, and the bed's true shape rises out of the wood.
DetailShorelines, cities and place names are engraved or printed at high resolution across the surface.

The British Columbia coast runs more than 25,000 kilometres once you count the islands, fjords and inlets. It is one of the most dramatic shorelines on earth: mountains falling straight into deep water, channels that run a hundred kilometres inland, and an archipelago that shelters the Inside Passage all the way to Alaska.

This map captures the full run of it, from the Salish Sea north past Haida Gwaii. The landmass is left in light birch while the water is cut and stained in deepening layers, so the contrast traces every inlet and island chain in relief.

This map is built from high-grade Baltic birch, laser-cut to follow the real bathymetry of the Pacific shelf and assembled by hand, layer by layer. Place names and geographic detail are engraved across the surface, and the finished piece is set in a solid wood frame made to fit.

Wow. This item is a showstopper. It's stunning! Arrived quickly. The backing was a little torn, but that's a thick paper and will be up against a wall anyhow so it's not a big deal. The front is just gorgeous!

No. The maps are built from separate layers of Baltic birch, each cut to a real depth contour and stacked, so you can feel every step. The clocks have the shorelines cut and set on top, with the depth contours etched into the wood.
