Salish Sea 3D Wood Wall Map
How the water becomes wood
A chart is a stack of flat sheets until the water's real soundings tell it what shape to take.
- SurveyReal bathymetric soundings set every contour line before a single cut is made.
- CutEach depth band is laser-cut from its own sheet of Baltic birch.
- StainWater layers are stained by hand, reading darker the deeper the water runs.
- StackThe sheets are registered and stacked in sequence, and the bed's true shape rises out of the wood.
- DetailShorelines, cities and place names are engraved or printed at high resolution across the surface.
- FrameA solid wood frame made to fit finishes the piece, ready to hang.

The Salish Sea is the inland ocean shared by British Columbia and Washington State: the waters around Vancouver Island, the Gulf Islands and the San Juans, reaching from Desolation Sound down into Puget Sound. It is one of the richest marine ecosystems on the Pacific coast, home to resident orca, salmon runs and some of the best cruising ground anywhere.
Its shape is complicated in a way that rewards a close look. Deep fjords cut into the mainland, hundreds of islands break up the channels, and the seabed drops away sharply just offshore. All of it is charted here in layered wood.
Our Salish Sea 3D wood map is cut from high-grade Baltic birch, each layer following the real bathymetry of the sea floor and hand-stained so the water darkens as it deepens. Shorelines, islands and place names are laser-etched across the surface, and the whole piece is set in a solid wood frame made to fit.
It arrives ready to hang.
