How the water becomes wood

The same charting work as our wall maps, cut down to a 30 centimetre face.

  1. SurveyReal bathymetric soundings set every contour before anything is cut.
  2. CutThe face starts as a single sheet of Baltic birch; the shorelines are cut and set on top.
  3. StainThe water layer is stained by hand to separate it from the land.
  4. EtchDepth contours, cities and points of interest are laser-etched into the grain.
  5. FitA quartz movement goes in the back. One AA battery and it is ready to hang.

The Salish Sea on a 30 centimetre clock face: Vancouver Island, the Gulf Islands, the Strait of Georgia and the run south into Puget Sound, charted in birch and fitted with a quartz movement.

The bathymetry etched into the face follows the real depths of the sea, which reach more than 600 metres in Bute Inlet. Victoria, Vancouver and the island chains are laser-marked across the surface, and the water layer is hand-stained to separate it from the land.

It reads as a clock from across the room and as a chart up close.
