How the water becomes wood

A chart is a stack of flat sheets until the water's real soundings tell it what shape to take.

  1. SurveyReal bathymetric soundings set every contour line before a single cut is made.
  2. CutEach depth band is laser-cut from its own sheet of Baltic birch.
  3. StainWater layers are stained by hand, reading darker the deeper the water runs.
  4. StackThe sheets are registered and stacked in sequence, and the bed's true shape rises out of the wood.
  5. DetailShorelines, cities and place names are engraved or printed at high resolution across the surface.
  6. FrameA solid wood frame made to fit finishes the piece, ready to hang.

Four of the five Great Lakes touch Ontario, and together they hold roughly 21% of the world's surface fresh water. From the granite shores of Georgian Bay to the shipping lanes off Thunder Bay, this is the largest freshwater system on earth and the defining feature of the province's geography.

The lakes are big enough to behave like oceans. They generate their own weather, run more than 400 metres deep in places, and connect the Atlantic to the interior of the continent by way of the St. Lawrence Seaway. More than 35,000 islands sit within them.

Our Great Lakes 3D wood map renders all five basins in layered Baltic birch. Each layer is laser-cut to follow the real bathymetry of the lake floor, then hand-stained so the water darkens as it deepens. The layers are assembled by hand and set in a solid wood frame made to fit, with laser-etched shorelines, cities and place names across the surface.

It arrives ready to hang.
