How the water becomes wood

A chart is a stack of flat sheets until the water's real soundings tell it what shape to take.

SurveyReal bathymetric soundings set every contour line before a single cut is made.
CutEach depth band is laser-cut from its own sheet of Baltic birch.
StainWater layers are stained by hand, reading darker the deeper the water runs.
StackThe sheets are registered and stacked in sequence, and the bed's true shape rises out of the wood.

The Gulf of St. Lawrence is where the Great Lakes finally reach the Atlantic, and it is one of the largest estuaries in the world. Quebec, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, Nova Scotia and Newfoundland all front onto it, and centuries of fishing, shipping and settlement have been shaped by these waters.

The coastline here is a study in variation: red sandstone cliffs on PEI, the highlands of Cape Breton, the long sheltered bays of New Brunswick, and Anticosti Island sitting alone in the middle of it all. Below the surface, the Laurentian Channel cuts a deep trench straight through the gulf toward the open ocean.

This map charts all of it. High-grade Baltic birch is laser-cut into as many as five layers that follow the real depth contours of the gulf, then hand-stained so the water darkens as it deepens. Ultra-high-resolution UV printing adds cities, waterways, islands and fine geographic detail across the surface, and the piece is finished in a solid wood frame made to fit.

It's absolutely amazing. So much detail, down to some of the large rock formations in the lake. We can not put words to how wonderful this piece is.

I was disappointed one of the two pictures backing was damaged and not from the shipping due to the box was not damaged. for the amount of money I spend this shouldn't have been sent to the customer like this.

Beautiful art piece and so detailed! It has tons of tiny details in the wood cutting and I like that the places are labeled and you can see highways, etc. Very cool! The piece arrived packaged and protected very well.
The gray frame is beautiful and I like the color of the wood. I kind of wish the water was more blue (like in the black frame), but I reallly really like the gray frame. So I'll a compromise. I still love it :)

No. The maps are built from separate layers of Baltic birch, each cut to a real depth contour and stacked, so you can feel every step. The clocks have the shorelines cut and set on top, with the depth contours etched into the wood.

How big is it?

The wall maps are 78.7 × 62.2 cm (31 × 24.5 in), framed. Lake Erie is 78.7 × 33 cm (31 × 13 in). The clocks are 30.5 cm (12 in) across.
